Price of Rice in Nigeria: How Much Is a Bag Today? (2021)

Prices of rice in Nigeria

It’s no news that the price of rice in Nigeria has risen due to border closure and the financial crisis caused by the pandemic. This editorial provides insights on the prices of rice at various markets in Nigeria, as discovered by the Zerofy.ng Price Survey Team.

Cost of Rice in Nigeria

Just a few years ago, the prices of rice hovered between ₦5,500 to ₦8,500. Sadly, due to poorly implemented governmental policies, these prices took an upward spiral in 2019.

Though there are genuine reasons to mitigate the negative balance of trade in Nigeria, the implementation of border closure was faulty at its core. Worse still, Nigeria wasn’t ready for the impact of a global crisis caused by a virus outbreak.

One can never be ready for such things. Moreover, the economy is currently experiencing a subtle meltdown, with over 80 million Nigerians earning below $2 a day. Although these have affected the prices of other food items, the prices of rice have taken the biggest hit.

These and several other factors not included herein have contributed to the increased prices of rice in the country. The biggest culprit, however, remains the border closure policy, as Zerofy.ng received reports stating that rice is currently being sold for ₦9,500 at the Seme border.

In addition to the unpleasant price tags on rice in the country, the Nigerian markets have experienced an influx of low quality local (stony) rice.

Prices of Paddy Rice in Nigeria

In time past, the availability, prices, and quantity of imported parboiled rice in Nigeria have had significant effects on the price levels of paddy rice.

In March 2020, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Muhammad Nanono, expressed his dissatisfaction with the prices of rice in Nigeria.

He exclaimed that 50kg bag of rice shouldn’t be sold for anything greater than ₦16,000 because the cost of purchasing an unprocessed bag of paddy rice is ₦9,000 and the maximum expenses incurred while processing the rice is ₦3,000. This gives you a total cost of ₦12,000.

Hence, it is unpatriotic to sell a bag of rice for more than ₦16,000, he said.
